Detox is short, and that changes the work
Most people are with us for days, not months. You are not managing a caseload for a year — you are meeting someone at their worst hour and getting them steady enough to accept the next level of care. The feedback loop is days long, which is unusual in this field.
A schedule that holds
Four tens or five eights, agreed with your supervisor and then left alone. Weekend coverage is written into the roles that carry it rather than appearing on a Friday. You can plan a life around it.
One campus, not a hospital floor
Briarwood is a licensed medical detox with its own building on North Lamar, and Austin runs both detox and outpatient out of it. The setting is clinical and calm rather than institutional.
The next step is in the building
Detox, residential, outpatient and sober living sit inside one organization. When you hand a client on, you can tell them where they are going and who they will see, and you can find out how it went.

A significant part of this workforce is in recovery. It is an asset in this building and it is never something you are asked to explain.
Raises happen on a schedule
Merit-based increases and promotion are reviewed on a cadence rather than when somebody works up the nerve to ask. Ask what the cadence is at interview — you should get a date.

What kinds of jobs are there at a detox center?
Licensed counselors, nurses, recovery advocates and support staff, plus admissions and administrative roles. Briarwood runs medical detox, so most clinical positions require a Texas credential — an LCDC for counseling roles, an RN or LVN for nursing.
