Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pack for a stay at a medical detox or residential treatment facility?Pack simply and comfortably: a few days’ worth of comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, basic toiletries (check which are allowed, as some facilities restrict items containing alcohol), any prescription medications in their original labeled bottles, a photo ID, your insurance card, and a small amount of comfort items like a book or photos. Leave valuables, large amounts of cash, and anything prohibited at home, and ask the facility for its specific allowed-and-prohibited list before you arrive, since policies vary. For a medical detox stay, packing tends to be lighter than for a longer residential program, but the essentials — clothing, medications, ID, and insurance information — are the same.
What items are usually not allowed at a detox or treatment facility? Most facilities restrict items that could pose a safety risk or interfere with recovery. Commonly prohibited items include alcohol and any products containing it (such as certain mouthwashes or hand sanitizers), drugs or paraphernalia, weapons, and sometimes outside food or large electronics. Policies differ from one facility to another, so the most reliable step is to request the specific prohibited-items list from the facility before you pack.
Can I bring my phone and electronics to detox?Electronics policies vary by facility and by stage of treatment. Some programs allow phones with limits on when they can be used, while others restrict them during the early days to help you focus on rest and recovery. Check with the facility about its current electronics policy before you arrive so you know what to expect and can plan how to stay in touch with family.
How much clothing should I pack for detox? For a medical detox stay, a few days’ worth of comfortable, casual clothing is usually enough, since most programs have laundry access or a relatively short length of stay. Bring layers you can adjust for comfort, sleepwear, and closed-toe shoes. If you’ll be transitioning to a longer program after detox, ask whether to pack for the full stay or arrange to bring more later.
