Medical detox in Austin, Houston and San Antonio
Detox is withdrawal management — getting the substance out of your system with medical staff watching, so the days that can be dangerous are managed rather than survived alone. It is the first stage of treatment, not a substitute for it.

What happens
- Withdrawal medication reviewed and adjusted daily by a physician
- Nurses on site around the clock at our Austin and Houston centers
- Bloodwork drawn and run on site, so changes happen the same day
- Seizure and delirium risk assessed from admission, not once symptoms start
- A specific plan for the next level of care, arranged before you leave
Is this the right level?
- Drinking or using daily, and stopping brings on physical symptoms
- A previous attempt to stop produced shakes, sweats, seizures or hallucinations
- Long-term benzodiazepine or opioid use that needs a supervised taper
When it is not
If withdrawal is not a medical risk for you, detox may not be the right starting point — and we will say so on the phone rather than admit you to something you do not need.
Where this sits in the whole path
What we detox from
Withdrawal is different for every substance and so is the medical response.
- Alcohol The withdrawal most likely to become dangerous without medical supervision.
- Benzodiazepines Xanax, Valium, Ativan — a supervised taper rather than an abrupt stop.
- Cocaine Crash symptoms and cravings, with the mental-health side treated too.
- Methamphetamine Exhaustion, low mood and cravings managed while the body resets.
- Opioids and opiates Fentanyl and prescription painkillers, with MAT started here when appropriate.
- Prescription drugs Stimulants, sedatives and painkillers, prescribed or otherwise.
- Heroin Comfort medication from the first hours, not after a wait.
Straight answers
Medical detox — common questions
Who provides medical detox?
Briarwood Detox Center delivers it at our own Austin and Houston and San Antonio centers.
Is medical detox right for me?
Drinking or using daily, and stopping brings on physical symptoms. A previous attempt to stop produced shakes, sweats, seizures or hallucinations. An assessment confirms it either way, and we will say so if it is not.
What if it is not the right level of care?
If withdrawal is not a medical risk for you, detox may not be the right starting point — and we will say so on the phone rather than admit you to something you do not need.
Does insurance cover it?
Most major insurance covers medically necessary treatment, and Briarwood is in network with 18 carriers. Coverage varies by plan, so benefits are verified free before anything is scheduled.
How soon can I start?
Admissions is staffed 24 hours a day and availability changes daily, so a call is the only way to get a real answer for today.
