UnitedHealthcare's Gold Card at Briarwood: What Changes If You Have UHC Coverage

The Gold Card Program is UnitedHealthcare’s waiver of prior authorization for providers whose requests it approved at least 92% of the time over two consecutive years.

Prior authorization is the step where a treatment provider asks the insurer to agree, before care starts, that the care is medically necessary. It protects members from being billed for care a plan will not cover, and it also delays admissions while a reviewer reads the file. UnitedHealthcare’s Gold Card Program removes that review for providers whose track record makes it redundant. To qualify, a provider must have submitted a minimum number of eligible requests in each of two consecutive years, and at least 92% of them must have been approved in each year. UnitedHealthcare describes the program as one that recognizes qualified practices that have consistently demonstrated adherence to evidence-based guidelines.

A qualified provider does not skip the insurer entirely. It files an advance notification before care begins, which tells UnitedHealthcare the service is starting, and the clinical documentation review that used to follow is waived.

What changes is the wait: there is no authorization decision to wait for before an intensive outpatient start, because Briarwood files an advance notification and care can begin.

In practice the first call runs as it always has. Admissions takes the plan details, runs the benefits check, and a nurse asks about substance use, medical history and what has been tried before. What is gone is the gap that used to follow, when the file went to a UnitedHealthcare reviewer and the family waited to hear whether the intensive outpatient program was approved. From October 1 that gap closes for the covered services. There is nothing for the member to submit; the notification is Briarwood’s job.

For someone finishing detox and moving into outpatient care, that means the step after detox can be scheduled with certainty rather than pending a decision. Alongside Joint Commission accreditation, which examines how a facility operates, it is one of the few outside checks on a program that a family can point to.
