Therapies and Holistic Support Available During Detox
Therapies and Holistic Support Available During Detox
Don't just "Dry Out", Create a NEW life
Detoxification is often imagined as a purely medical process – just “drying out” or taking medications to ease withdrawal. While medical stabilization is a core component, effective outpatient detox programs like Briarwood’s also provide a range of therapeutic and holistic supports to heal the mind and spirit during this critical time. We understand that detox can stir up intense emotions and discomfort. By offering counseling sessions, group therapy, and holistic activities such as music and art, we treat the whole person and not just the physical symptoms of withdrawal. This comprehensive approach not only makes the detox experience more comfortable, but also prepares you for the next steps in recovery by starting the emotional healing process early.
Your future is waiting. Are you ready to step into it? Call now!
A Compassionate, Supportive Environment.
A Compassionate, Supportive Environment
All the therapies and activities described are delivered in a compassionate and safe environment. Our staff members are not just professionals; they are caring individuals who truly want to see you succeed. Detox can be a vulnerable time, so we foster an atmosphere of respect, confidentiality, and encouragement. Group sessions are kept confidential and judgment-free, as noted, and participation in any activity is always encouraged, never forced. If something isn’t resonating with you (say, you really don’t like drawing), we’ll find another outlet. Your detox plan is personalized – so we adapt therapeutic activities to what helps you the most.
We often receive feedback from clients that these therapy and holistic elements were what made their detox “not as bad as I thought” or even a surprisingly positive experience. Many come in expecting pure misery, and while detox is no vacation, they find moments of peace – like when focusing on coloring a mandala, or moments of joy – like when a group bursts into laughter over a shared joke, even in the midst of withdrawal. Those moments are crucial because they remind you that life in recovery can have happiness and relief. You are not destined to be in pain; healing is happening and you can actually feel good naturally, even if just for a moment. As detox progresses, those moments lengthen and multiply.
We don’t just help you stay sober. We help you build a life you’re excited to protect.
Individual Counseling: One-on-One Support
Our one hour detox process, gets you back to life quickly
During detox at Briarwood, you will typically meet with a detox counselor individually on a daily basis. These one-on-one sessions are a cornerstone of our therapeutic support. Even though detox is short-term, these conversations provide several benefits:
As your body withdraws from substances, you may experience a flood of emotions – anxiety, sadness, guilt, anger. Counseling offers a safe outlet to express what you’re feeling. Our counselors are trained to listen without judgment and to help you make sense of these emotions. For example, you might talk about how fear of withdrawal kept you from quitting before, or relief that you’ve taken this step. Focusing on the present moment is often emphasized; we help you take it day by day. Clients often describe feeling “heard” and less overwhelmed after voicing their feelings in counseling.
If you hit a rough patch – intense cravings or a moment of wanting to give up – having a counselor to turn to can be lifesaving. They will remind you why you’re doing this, reinforce that the pain is temporary, and perhaps guide you through a grounding exercise or visualization until the wave passes. This kind of real-time support can keep you on track through the hardest hours of detox.
One-on-one sessions are also an opportunity to learn about addiction and recovery. You might have questions like “What’s happening to my brain right now?” or “Why do I feel emotions so strongly now?” Our counselors will educate you on withdrawal and also begin planting seeds about the recovery process (like explaining the importance of aftercare, or how addiction hijacks reward pathways in the brain). We also provide feedback – gently calling attention to any unhealthy thought patterns that emerge. For example, if you say “I don’t think I can do this,” the counselor might help you reframe that thought and recognize your strength for making it this far.
In individual sessions, we start discussing future plans in a supportive manner. This could include initial talks about triggers and how to handle them, or what kind of treatment you might do after detox. We’re preparing you for entry into rehab or next steps, as one of the primary goals of counseling in detox. By the end of detox, you and your counselor will have the framework of an aftercare plan developed (involving your input and that of our whole team).
Privacy and trust are key in individual therapy. Everything you discuss is confidential (with standard exceptions for safety). Clients often form a strong bond with their detox counselor in just a matter of days – it’s amazing how healing a short therapeutic connection can be in a time of need.
Group Therapy: Strength in Numbers
Alongside individual counseling, group therapy sessions are frequently offered during detox at Briarwood. You might wonder, “Group therapy during detox? I won’t be there long – what’s the point?” But even brief group sessions can be extremely beneficial. Detox groups are typically process-oriented and supportive, not heavy trauma-processing or intense psychotherapy. Here’s what to expect and gain from group therapy in detox:
In a detox group, you sit with peers who are also in early recovery and guided by a therapist. Simply hearing others say, “I’m struggling with cravings” or “I’m scared of facing life without alcohol” can be very reassuring – you realize you’re not alone in those feelings. There is great strength in knowing others truly get it. The isolation of addiction starts to dissolve. Many people say this camaraderie in detox was their first introduction to the recovery community spirit, motivating them to continue with support groups later.
Group members can offer each other practical tips or words of encouragement. For example, someone might share how they cope with anxiety at night, or what keeps them focused on sobriety (like thinking of their kids). These peer-to-peer interactions build hope and often resonate deeply. A counselor moderating the group will ensure everyone has a chance to speak and that the tone remains positive and respectful. It’s a judgment-free zone, where people can be honest. What’s said in group stays in group, encouraging openness.
Detox groups might cover topics like: understanding withdrawal symptoms, stress management techniques, the concept of one day at a time, and basic relapse prevention. They are somewhat educational (the counselor might present a topic briefly) and then open for discussion. For instance, the therapist could start a conversation on coping with cravings, and group members can share what has worked or not worked for them. Another common focus is rebuilding self-esteem; addiction often knocks people down, so hearing compliments or acknowledgements from peers (“You’re doing great,” “You’re strong for choosing to detox”) can start to rebuild a sense of self-worth.
For some, detox group is the first time in a long while they’ve communicated in a group without being under the influence. It’s a safe place to practice listening and sharing sober. Re-engaging socially is part of healing – addiction can make people withdraw or only interact superficially. Group therapy helps break down emotional barriers and practice healthy communication. You might find yourself laughing with others or giving someone else a word of comfort, which can be incredibly fulfilling.
Our goal with group sessions in detox is not to overwhelm you, but to uplift you. Participation is encouraged but not forced – if you’re not feeling well enough one day or prefer to just listen, that’s okay. However, we find that even a short 30-45 minute group, once a day, can significantly improve mood and motivation during detox. It reminds you that you’re embarking on a journey that many others have successfully walked, and you’re doing it together, not in isolation.
Evidence-Based Therapy Modalities
While holistic supports are wonderful, we also ensure that the core therapeutic approaches we use are evidence-based – meaning they’ve been researched and proven effective for addiction recovery. During detox (and more so in subsequent treatment), you might hear references to modalities like:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Even in detox, we utilize principles of CBT to help you identify negative thought patterns that could jeopardize sobriety and begin to replace them with healthier thoughts. For example, the belief “I can’t get through this without using” is challenged and reframed into “Withdrawal is temporary, and I am getting through it, one hour at a time.” This technique reduces anxiety and builds self-efficacy.
Motivational Interviewing: Our counselors employ motivational interviewing techniques – a collaborative style that helps you explore your own reasons for wanting to change and strengthen your motivation. In detox, one might not feel very “motivated” during the discomfort, so we help you recall why you chose to do this and what positive future you envision substance-free. This evidence-based approach has been key in helping many clients commit to continuing treatment after detox.
Relapse Prevention Therapy: Right from detox, we start teaching basic relapse prevention concepts. This includes helping you understand triggers, high-risk situations, and coping strategies. While deeper relapse prevention planning happens later in rehab/IOP, the foundation is laid in detox group and individual sessions. We might discuss strategies like urge surfing (riding the wave of a craving) or the acronym HALT (avoiding being too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired – states that can trigger relapse).
By integrating these proven therapies with our holistic offerings, we give you the best of both worlds – scientific, structured treatment and creative, flexible healing experiences.

Sara Holliday-Jacobs2024-05-05Briarwood definitely surpassed my expectations. I've been to a detox facility before, unfortunately, so I can honestly say I wasn't looking forward to having to go through the process again. But, it was seamless. I was well taken care of. I truly thought that the staff cared about me and my well being from beginning to end. The facility was clean and the food was good. I was extremely comfortable and the atmosphere was laid back and conducive to my recovery. I'm coming up on 60 days sober and I don't think I'd even be alive right now if it weren't for this place.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

Juliana W2024-02-14September 19th of 2017 I checked into Briarwood after another failed attempt to handle my substance abuse issue on my own. It was a great place to start my recovery journey and I’m so grateful because thanks to their help, that was the last day I used or drank. Unlike some other detoxes, this is not a hospital setting, but they still have nurses there available all the time. So it felt more comfortable (as comfortable as detox can be). The staff were all very attentive and kind. Counselors were accessible and I appreciated the fact that they set you up with a plan. My only advice is to take suggestions, these people know what they are doing and truly care and want clients to succeed. They were able to coordinate a transition into residential treatment for me which helped me stay sober long term. Thank y’all for giving me my life back!

What Is Rapid Detox? Learn How Outpatient Rehab Supports Recovery | Briarwood Detox Center in Austin
Rapid detox is a medical procedure designed to accelerate the withdrawal process for individuals dependent on opioids or other substances. It is often marketed as a fast and painless way to detox, but the reality is more complex. While the idea of quickly eliminating toxins from the body sounds appealing, this method carries significant risks that should not be overlooked. For many, a structured treatment approach, such as outpatient rehab, offers a safer and more effective way to achieve lasting recovery.
At Briarwood Detox Center, we believe in evidence-based detox methods that prioritize patient safety. Understanding the risks and benefits of rapid detox can help individuals make informed decisions about their recovery journey.

Why Home Drug and Alcohol Detox Is Dangerous | Outpatient Rehab | Briarwood Detox Center in Austin
Detoxing from drugs or alcohol is the first step toward recovery. However, attempting to do it alone at home is highly dangerous. Without medical support, withdrawal symptoms can worsen quickly, leading to severe health problems. Therefore, seeking professional care at an outpatient rehab or detox center is essential for both safety and long-term success.
At Briarwood Detox Center, we provide a structured environment with medical assistance to ensure a safe detox process. Below are five key reasons why detoxing at home is risky and can even be life-threatening.
