Dual Diagnosis Support During Detox
Dual Diagnosis Support During Detox
Support When You Need it The Most
For individuals struggling with both addiction and mental health issues – a situation known as dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders – detox can be especially challenging. Briarwood Detox Center recognizes that successful recovery requires treating the whole person, not just the physical symptoms of withdrawal. During detox at our San Antonio facility, we provide comprehensive dual diagnosis support to address underlying mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder alongside substance detoxification. By integrating mental health care into the detox process, we lay a solid foundation for long-term recovery and reduce the risk of relapse.
Your future is waiting. Are you ready to step into it? Call now!
What Is Dual Diagnosis and Why It Matters.
What Is Dual Diagnosis and Why It Matters
A dual diagnosis means an individual has two types of disorders simultaneously: a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. Common examples include alcohol addiction with depression, opioid addiction with anxiety, or stimulant abuse with bipolar disorder. These conditions often interact in a vicious cycle – mental health symptoms can fuel substance abuse as a form of self-medication, and conversely, drug/alcohol use can worsen psychiatric symptoms. It’s estimated that roughly half of people with addiction also have a co-occurring mental health issue.
Addressing dual diagnosis is critical because ignoring one issue often undermines treatment of the other. For instance, if during detox we only manage withdrawal but not severe anxiety, that anxiety could lead someone to relapse shortly after detox to find relief. Similarly, treating depression without acknowledging ongoing substance use could limit the effectiveness of antidepressants or therapy. Integrated treatment – meaning treating both issues at the same time – is widely considered best practice for dual diagnosis cases.
At Briarwood Detox Center, we emphasize from the outset that mental health is a key part of detox care. Our intake assessment will screen for any psychiatric history or current symptoms. It’s important to be open about issues like panic attacks, trauma history, or mood swings when you begin detox, so we can plan appropriate support. Our philosophy: detox is not just cleansing the body, but also stabilizing the mind.
We don’t just help you stay sober. We help you build a life you’re excited to protect.
Medical and Psychiatric Care in Detox
Our one hour detox process, gets you back to life quickly
During your detox program, our medical team works hand-in-hand with mental health professionals to ensure you’re supported on both fronts. Here’s how we incorporate dual diagnosis support:
Psychiatric Evaluation:
If you have a known mental health disorder or if our team observes significant psychological distress, a psychiatric evaluation can be conducted early in detox. We have access to psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners who understand the unique dynamics of detox. They can assess whether medication is warranted to manage mental health symptoms during withdrawal. For example, continuing an antidepressant or safely prescribing a non-addictive anxiety medication can be crucial for stability.
Medication Management:
Our detox is medically assisted, meaning we use medications not only for withdrawal symptoms but also to tend to mental health needs as appropriate. If you arrived already on psychiatric medications (such as SSRIs for depression or mood stabilizers for bipolar), we will normally continue those medications throughout detox under medical supervision, unless there’s a specific contraindication. Stopping certain psych meds abruptly can be dangerous, so we ensure continuity of care. Additionally, we may introduce medications short-term: for instance, a person with severe anxiety might receive non-addictive anxiolytics or sleep aids to get through the acute detox phase comfortably.
Monitoring and Adjustments:
The interplay of withdrawal and mental health can be complex. For example, withdrawal itself can cause symptoms like depression, paranoia, or hallucinations in some cases. Our team is skilled at differentiating what is withdrawal-related and what might be an underlying psychiatric condition. We monitor your mood, cognition, and behavior daily. If you exhibit signs of serious mental distress (such as suicidal thoughts or psychosis), we have protocols to ensure your safety – including one-on-one supervision if needed or transfer to a higher level of care for psychiatric stabilization. However, most often we can manage symptoms in-house by adjusting medications or providing therapeutic interventions. Our flexible approach means your detox plan can be adapted on the fly to address any emergent psychological issues.
Trauma-Informed Care:
We recognize that unresolved trauma often underlies both addiction and other mental health problems. Our staff practices trauma-informed care, which means we create an environment that feels safe and does not re-traumatize clients. Simple examples: we always explain procedures before touching a patient for medical exams, we allow choices (like the gender of your counselor if available), and we avoid confrontational approaches. During detox, we won’t delve deeply into trauma therapy (that is more appropriate in rehab), but we will ensure that any past trauma you disclose is noted so that follow-up care can tackle it. We understand that by acknowledging trauma early and treating you with compassion and respect, we help reduce anxiety and build trust, which makes the entire detox process smoother.
Counseling and Emotional Support
Detox can be an emotionally turbulent time, especially for those with dual diagnosis. To support your mental well-being, counseling is a core component of our detox services. Our counselors and therapists are not only addiction specialists but also trained in basic mental health interventions and crisis management. Here’s what you can expect:
One-on-One Counseling: Each client is assigned a detox counselor who can meet with you individually. In these private sessions, you have the space to talk about how you’re feeling emotionally. For dual diagnosis clients, this is a lifeline – you might discuss the depression that’s resurfacing now that you’re sober, or fears you have because of past trauma. Your counselor will provide empathy and teach you grounding techniques to manage anxiety or mood swings in the moment. They also educate you on the connection between your addiction and mental health – many people find it enlightening to understand how, say, their alcohol use exacerbated their anxiety and vice versa. This understanding is a powerful motivator to continue treating both issues.
Coping Skills Development: Even within the short span of detox (typically a few days to a week), we begin equipping you with coping strategies. For example, if you struggle with panic attacks, our team might guide you through breathing exercises or mindfulness meditation during detox. If depression is an issue, simply establishing a daily routine (meals, light exercise, short outdoor breaks for sunshine) can have mood-lifting effects, so we encourage those practices. We realize detox is just the start, but every skill you learn here can be carried into rehab or outpatient therapy later. Laying this groundwork early gives you a head start on managing your mental health in sobriety.
Group Support: Where appropriate, you may participate in small group sessions or discussions with peers, focusing on topics like dealing with emotions in early recovery. Hearing from others who also have depression or PTSD can be validating – you realize you’re not the only one feeling this way. Our staff facilitates these groups to ensure they are constructive and supportive. Clients often mention that these conversations reduce the shame or isolation they feel about their mental health. It’s a gentle introduction to the concept that recovery involves a community and shared understanding.
Family Communication: With dual diagnosis, family support and understanding can be crucial. With your consent, our counselors can include your family in updates or brief counseling sessions, even during detox. We might explain to a spouse, for instance, why you seem more anxious or irritable during withdrawal and how they can help you cope. Educating loved ones that your mental health symptoms are part of the healing process can foster patience and support, rather than frustration. Since addiction is a family disease, involving them now sets the stage for more comprehensive family therapy later in treatment.
Continuity into Aftercare for Dual Diagnosis
Supporting dual diagnosis during detox is not a standalone effort – it’s the first phase of an ongoing treatment continuum. Briarwood Detox Center ensures that any psychiatric diagnoses or treatments initiated during detox are seamlessly handed off to your next level of care. Upon completion of detox, we will provide you (and your next provider) with a detailed summary of any mental health findings and medications. For example, if we started you on an antidepressant or adjusted a dose, that information goes directly to the psychiatrist or doctor who will continue your care in rehab or outpatient. Consistency is key; we don’t want you to feel like you’re starting over with a new team, so we strive for smooth communication between providers.
We also strongly encourage that dual diagnosis clients follow through with specialized aftercare. This might mean choosing a rehab or IOP that has mental health services on-site or a reputation for good psychiatric care. It could also involve scheduling an appointment with a psychiatrist immediately after detox if you haven’t been connected to one yet. Briarwood staff can help set this up. Our goal is that the progress made on stabilizing your mental health during detox continues uninterrupted.
Many of our clients with co-occurring disorders find that once they’re through detox and on proper psychiatric medication, they feel hope and clarity that they hadn’t felt in years. “I was finally getting help for all of me,” as one alum described. This underscores why we commit to dual diagnosis support: it’s transformative to address both mind and body from the start.
Compassionate, Nonjudgmental Care
Dual diagnosis patients often carry extra stigma or feel guilt – you might think “Now I have two problems to deal with.”It’s important to know that at Briarwood, we meet you with compassion and zero judgment. We understand that mental illness is not a moral failing, just as addiction is not; both are treatable health conditions. Our team creates a nurturing environment where you can feel comfortable disclosing what you’re experiencing. Whether you’re dealing with hallucinations, intense mood swings, or crushing sadness, we’ve seen it before and we know how to help. You won’t be labeled or dismissed. Instead, we’ll empower you – showing you that getting a handle on mental health is absolutely doable and will significantly enhance your recovery.
We also emphasize education: we’ll teach you and your family about how co-occurring disorders interact. Knowledge is power. When you understand why you feel extreme anxiety when you stop drinking (for instance, because alcohol was damping your overactive nervous system and now it’s rebounding), it makes the experience less frightening and more manageable. We’ll reassure you that what you’re feeling is a known part of the process and that it will get better with the right support.
In detox, you might hear us use phrases like “treating the whole person” or “holistic approach” – this isn’t just a slogan. For dual diagnosis clients, it means we truly consider everything going on with you. We provide nutritious meals to help your brain chemistry rebalance, encourage rest and gentle activity to improve your mood, and even offer amenities like music therapy sessions if they help ease anxiety (listening to calming music or engaging in art can be therapeutic during detox). All these elements work together to support both your mental and physical recovery.

Sara Holliday-Jacobs2024-05-05Briarwood definitely surpassed my expectations. I've been to a detox facility before, unfortunately, so I can honestly say I wasn't looking forward to having to go through the process again. But, it was seamless. I was well taken care of. I truly thought that the staff cared about me and my well being from beginning to end. The facility was clean and the food was good. I was extremely comfortable and the atmosphere was laid back and conducive to my recovery. I'm coming up on 60 days sober and I don't think I'd even be alive right now if it weren't for this place.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

Juliana W2024-02-14September 19th of 2017 I checked into Briarwood after another failed attempt to handle my substance abuse issue on my own. It was a great place to start my recovery journey and I’m so grateful because thanks to their help, that was the last day I used or drank. Unlike some other detoxes, this is not a hospital setting, but they still have nurses there available all the time. So it felt more comfortable (as comfortable as detox can be). The staff were all very attentive and kind. Counselors were accessible and I appreciated the fact that they set you up with a plan. My only advice is to take suggestions, these people know what they are doing and truly care and want clients to succeed. They were able to coordinate a transition into residential treatment for me which helped me stay sober long term. Thank y’all for giving me my life back!
