Aftercare and Continuing Treatment Options

Aftercare and Continuing Treatment Options

Your new life can continue in San Antonio.

Detox is only the beginning of the recovery journey. After the initial withdrawal phase, it’s critical to engage in continuing treatment and aftercare to build on your progress. In San Antonio, Briarwood Detox Center ensures every client has a clear plan for after detox – because research and experience show that the longer you participate in structured treatment, the better your chances of lifelong sobriety. This page explores what happens after detox, highlighting available treatment options like intensive outpatient programs (IOP), therapy, sober living, and other aftercare services in San Antonio. By understanding and embracing aftercare, you set yourself up for lasting recovery.

Your future is waiting. Are you ready to step into it? Call now!

Why Aftercare Matters

Why Aftercare Matters

Successfully completing a detox program is a major accomplishment. Your body is free of substances – an important first step. However, detox alone does not address the psychological, behavioral, and social aspects of addiction. Without further treatment, the risk of relapse remains high. Think of detox as clearing the weeds from a neglected garden; aftercare is the ongoing tending and planting of new seeds to ensure healthy growth.

Long-term rehabilitation and support provide the tools needed to stay sober. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the longer an individual remains in treatment and aftercare, the greater their chance of maintaining sobriety. Extended programs offer a safe space to practice sobriety skills, address underlying issues like trauma or mental health, and establish a supportive community. In short, aftercare is where recovery truly flourishes.

During detox at Briarwood, our team will help you plan for the next phase because we know it’s essential. We stress that detox is not an endpoint but the start of a continuum of care. Clients who follow through with recommended aftercare (whether it’s residential rehab, IOP, or sober living) consistently report better outcomes and more confidence in their sobriety. This is why we call aftercare planning an “integral part of outpatient treatment” – it is built into our process from day one.

We don’t just help you stay sober. We help you build a life you’re excited to protect.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

One 3 hour session, 3 times a week. Afternoon and Evening Groups are available

One of the most popular continuing treatment options after detox in San Antonio is enrolling in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). An IOP is a form of treatment that allows you to live at home (or in a sober living house) while attending therapy sessions multiple times per week. It’s less intensive than inpatient rehab but more structured than basic weekly counseling. For many people coming out of detox – especially those who did an outpatient detox – IOP is an ideal next step.

IOP FAQ

Typically, an IOP entails attending treatment around 3-5 days a week for a few hours each session. Sessions often take place in the evenings, which is convenient if you’ve returned to work or daily responsibilities. At Briarwood Detox Center, our recommended IOP partners in San Antonio include a mix of individual counseling, group therapy, and family therapy each week. You’ll delve deeper into issues like understanding triggers, practicing coping strategies, relapse prevention techniques, and processing emotions in a supportive group of peers. If you have a co-occurring mental health condition, the IOP will incorporate treatment for that as well (for example, medication management for depression or anxiety alongside addiction counseling).

Intensive outpatient care provides a robust support system while granting you the freedom to gradually rebuild your independent life. It’s especially useful as a “step-down” level of care – meaning it bridges the gap between the controlled environment of detox (or inpatient rehab) and the full independence of everyday life. In IOP, you’re accountable to attend sessions regularly, which helps maintain structure. At the same time, you can apply what you learn immediately in real-world scenarios. For instance, you might learn communication skills in a morning group, then practice those with family or coworkers that very day. Challenges or temptations that arise can be addressed in the next session, creating a feedback loop of learning and improvement.

Briarwood’s team will typically set you up with an IOP as soon as you’re medically stable after detox – often, clients start IOP within a week of finishing detox. This quick handoff ensures momentum continues. Continuity of care is key: our staff can coordinate with the IOP counselors, sharing insights (with your consent) from your detox experience so they know what areas to focus on. Overall, IOP is a highly effective aftercare option, giving you intensive support without requiring a residential stay. Many find they can resume work or school while in IOP, striking a balance between recovery and daily life responsibilities.

Residential Rehab Programs

Another continuing care path after detox is enrolling in a residential rehabilitation program. Residential rehab (also known as inpatient rehab or rehab facility treatment) involves living at a treatment center for an extended period, typically ranging from 30 days to 90+ days.

If your addiction is long-term or severe, or if you have significant behavioral health issues that require immersive therapy, a residential program might be advised by our team. Some clients who complete detox realize they need a deeper level of support away from home triggers; in such cases, going straight into a rehab facility provides a structured, trigger-free environment to focus entirely on recovery. Residential rehabs in the San Antonio area (and across Texas) offer a variety of therapeutic modalities – from cognitive-behavioral therapy and trauma therapy to recreational and vocational activities – all within a 24/7 supportive setting.

In a long-term treatment facility, your day will be highly structured. Mornings might include meditation or fitness, followed by multiple therapy sessions (individual and group) throughout the day, educational workshops, and 12-step or other recovery meetings in the evenings. You’ll be living alongside peers in recovery, which builds camaraderie and a sense of community. Many rehabs also involve family therapy sessions (either in person or via phone/Zoom) to begin repairing family dynamics. The intensity of residential care often leads to profound personal growth – you can address underlying issues like trauma, learn life skills, and practice living substance-free in a supervised setting. By the time you discharge, you have a solid foundation and an aftercare plan to maintain progress.

Briarwood Detox Center works closely with trusted residential rehab partners. If inpatient rehab is in your best interest, we will facilitate a smooth transition – helping with referrals, sharing your detox records (with permission), and even arranging transportation if needed. Our priority is that you don’t have a gap in treatment. Some clients go directly from their last day of detox to the rehab facility the same day, which can be very beneficial. Others might have a short break (a few days) and then enter rehab. Either way, we ensure you’re supported during that interim (through check-ins or medication continuation) until you’re in the next program.

Sober Living Homes

Early recovery can be fragile, and one of the biggest determinants of success is your living environment. If returning to your previous home life poses risks – perhaps others in the home use substances, or it’s filled with triggers and stress – moving into a sober living home after detox is a strong option. Sober living homes (also known as halfway houses or recovery residences) are alcohol- and drug-free living environments for people in recovery, offering structure and support as you transition to independent living.

How Sober Living Works: In sober living, you typically share a house or apartment with other recovering individuals. There are basic rules: no substance use, mandatory curfews, shared responsibilities like chores, and often requirements to attend recovery meetings or IOP. Residents pay rent and live somewhat independently – usually either working, job-seeking, or attending school during the day. The atmosphere is like a supportive family: everyone is working on sobriety, so there’s accountability and peer encouragement. Many sober houses in San Antonio also have a house manager or senior resident who enforces rules and provides mentorship.

Benefits: Sober living provides a safe, trigger-free environment where you can practice living sober in the “real world” but with a safety net. If you have cravings or a bad day, you’re surrounded by people who understand and can help you get through it without relapsing. This consistent community support significantly reduces isolation and builds confidence. You also regain life skills and responsibility – paying rent on time, maintaining the home, finding sober leisure activities – all while staying clean. It’s an excellent way to reinforce what you learned in detox and rehab. Typically, residents stay in sober living for a few months to a year, depending on their needs. There’s no rush to leave; the goal is to leave only when you feel stable and ready.

Briarwood Detox Center can recommend reputable sober living homes in San Antonio. We partner with both men’s and women’s sober homes (and some co-ed or LGBTQ-friendly houses), helping you choose one that fits your needs and comfort. For example, if you prefer a smaller house with a higher level of supervision, we know options for that. If you want a home that’s convenient to your workplace or IOP location, we can guide you. Some clients choose to enter sober living immediately after detox if their home environment isn’t supportive – even if they’re also doing outpatient treatment. This combination can significantly strengthen your early recovery.

Living in a sober home also usually enrolls you in a monitoring program and connects you with a sober coach or mentor, adding layers of accountability. You’ll have regular drug tests to ensure the environment remains substance-free, and a relapse prevention plan in place.

Individual Therapy and Counseling

Whether or not you engage in formal programs like IOP or rehab, ongoing individual therapy is highly recommended after detox. Many clients continue seeing a therapist or counselor one-on-one on a weekly or biweekly basis. In these sessions, you can continue the inner work that might have begun in detox – exploring triggers, building coping mechanisms, addressing co-occurring mental health issues, and working through personal challenges.

Briarwood’s outpatient detox includes some counseling, but after detox you will benefit from more in-depth therapy. We can connect you with counselors in San Antonio who specialize in addiction recovery. Modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help you reframe negative thought patterns and avoid relapse. Trauma-focused therapy might be crucial if past trauma fueled your addiction, as addressing it can greatly reduce the urge to self-medicate. The key is finding a therapist you trust and sticking with the process. Over time, therapy can greatly improve your emotional regulation and resilience.

For those with a dual diagnosis (e.g., addiction and depression or anxiety), continuing sessions with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner is also important. They can manage medications for mental health while coordinating with your addiction counselors. Treating both conditions hand-in-hand gives you the best shot at long-term recovery

Support Groups and 12-Step Programs

In addition to formal treatment, peer support groups play a valuable role in aftercare. San Antonio has a vibrant recovery community with numerous 12-step meetings (like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous), as well as alternative groups such as SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery (Buddhist-inspired), and faith-based recovery groups. We encourage our clients to start attending support group meetings as soon as they are able – even during outpatient detox, if they feel up to it. These meetings are free, widely available (some even online), and provide fellowship and inspiration from people who have walked the same path.

The advantages of joining a group like AA or NA include building a sober network of friends, finding a sponsor or mentor, and learning from others’ experiences. Hearing success stories from those who have stayed sober for years can be incredibly motivating. It also gives you a place to turn if you’re struggling at odd hours – there’s usually a meeting or at least a fellow member you can call when you need support, day or night. This sense of community can reduce feelings of loneliness and give you a sense of belonging in sobriety.

During aftercare planning, our team will provide information on local meetings near you. For example, if you live on the north side of San Antonio, we might direct you to groups in that area. We often recommend trying a variety of meetings to find one where you feel comfortable – each group has its own atmosphere. Some clients worry they are too shy or don’t follow a specific belief system; rest assured, there are many types of meetings and you are not required to speak or conform, just attending and listening is beneficial. The accountability and hope found in support groups are a powerful supplement to professional treatment.

At Briarwood Detox Center, we don’t hand you a generic list and send you on your way – we craft a customized aftercare plan with you.
